Money-Saving Tips for China

在中国省钱的技巧
✅ China is Very Affordable — If You Eat Local
The biggest budget lever in China is food. Eating at local restaurants (本地餐厅) instead of Western restaurants can cut your food budget by 60–70%. A full hot meal with soup costs ¥25–40 at a local spot vs ¥150–200 at an international restaurant.
💰 Accommodation
  • Book on Trip.com (携程) for best domestic prices
  • Search 经济型酒店 for budget hotels — cleaner than the name suggests
  • Avoid peak weeks: Golden Week (Oct 1–7), Spring Festival, Canton Fair
  • Mid-week rates are 20–30% cheaper than weekends
🍜 Food
  • Eat where locals eat — look for full restaurants
  • Lunch sets (午餐套餐) give best value: ¥25–40 for a full meal
  • Supermarket chain Hema (盒马) has excellent ready-to-eat food at low prices
  • Avoid tourist-area restaurants — double the price, half the quality
🚇 Transport
  • Metro is always cheaper than Didi — use it as default
  • High-speed train 2nd class is great value (¥100–180 per 2hr)
  • Book train tickets 30 days in advance on Trip.com
  • City buses cost ¥1–2 — extremely cheap if you know the route
🎯 Activities
  • Many parks, temples and hutong areas are free
  • Book tickets online — cheaper than door price and avoids queues
  • Museum free days: most state museums are free on specific weekdays
  • Temple of Heaven park entry ¥15, inner areas ¥30 — skip the inner sections
💳 Payment & Cards
  • Use a Wise or Revolut card — minimal forex fees vs standard cards (save 3%)
  • Withdraw CNY at Bank of China ATMs — best exchange rates
  • Keep ¥500 cash as backup — some small vendors are cash only
  • Alipay Tour Pass charges 3% — factor into budget
📱 Digital
  • China Unicom SIM ¥200–300 for 30 days is cheaper than international roaming
  • Trip.com eSIM or Alipay eSIM avoids firewall — may save VPN cost
  • Meituan food delivery is cheaper than eating out most evenings
  • Luckin Coffee (瑞幸) and Manner are half the price of Starbucks
⚠️ Hidden Costs to Budget For
One-off costs on arrival: SIM card (¥200–300) + VPN subscription (¥50–100) + initial Alipay top-up processing fee. Also budget for: checked baggage on domestic flights, tourist site photography fees (rare but exist), and tips at high-end international restaurants (5–10% is emerging in Shanghai).
